STIM royalties when your music plays in commercials

Will your music play in a commercial? Here we give you help and advice on how to get paid as quickly as possible.

Receiving royalties when your music plays in commercials requires that we know the song itself. You give this notice to STIM by registering your work via My Pages.

How do I get royalties for commercial music?

We work with the company BMAT, which scans commercials that show on broadcast networks globally. Thanks to BMAT, you do not need to report your music to STIM afterward.

The pros of using BMAT for TV commercials:

  • Easy upload of your song via the BMAT portal
  • No need for complicated ID codes and forms
  • A possibility to identify your music both in Sweden and overseas

When is the best time to upload my music at BMAT?

We urge you to upload the recording as soon as possible when you know that your song will be part of a commercial – but at the latest, upload the file before the commercial stops airing.

When do I get paid for music in commercials?

STIM pays out royalties for music in commercials in June and December. The wait till you get paid varies, but it most often takes place 6 to 12 months from the performance.

Does BMAT cover all commercial music on Swedish TV?

BMAT scans TV3, TV4, Kanal 5, and TV6, which cover the majority of the commercials on Swedish television. Please note that many of our sister organizations also use BMAT, which provides you additional possibilities to get STIM monies for TV commercials played outside of Sweden.

The commercial where my song has a part will air on other networks than those that BMAT covers. Will I still be paid by STIM?

Yes, but if it does not show on TV3, TV4, Kanal 5, or TV6, you must report this via My Pages under the option “Music in commercials”. The deadline to report your commercial use manually is April 1, to be in time before our June payment, and October 1 to make it to our December payment.

What do I do if I miss royalties for my commercial music?

If twelve months pass and you still have not received STIM royalties for your music, you can file a complaint on My Pages. The complaint must be with STIM no later than three years after the performance.
