Music in sports and exercise

Music and physical activity belong together. Music creates the right mood and encourages both top-level athletes and people working out to stay in shape to try just a little harder.

Anyone who is managing a gym, organizing dance courses, competitions or any other form of physical exercise where music is played, need a music license from STIM.

Where does the money go?

The money we collect from licensees is individually distributed to the music creators and music publishers. STIM is owned by the right holders and operates with support of the Swedish copyright legislation

Music at the gym

When you run a gym you pay a license fee based on the area of ​​the premises and the number of open days. A fitness center with an area of ​​100 square meters has an annual fee of 1452 SEK.

If you play music during supervised exercise classes such as aerobics, spinning, aerobics, yoga or similar, you need to supplement your license. More information can be found under the next heading.

Music during supervised exercise sessions

If you are playing music during supervised exercise classes, such as aerobics, spinning, fitness classes or yoga, you pay a fee based on the number of sessions and participants. For groups of up to 25 participants, the fee is 13.23 per session.

Music in public sports facilities

When you run a facility such as a swimming pool, ski resort or the skating rink available to the general public you pay fee based on the number of visitors per year.

For a facility with up to 10,000 visitors per year annual fee is 1377 SEK.

Music during sports events

Anyone who organizes sporting events such as individual competitions, championships, training matches before an audience, or larger sporting events such as Vättern Runt, Stockholm Marathon, DN Galan or the Stockholm Horse Show, need a music license from STIM covering the music played before and during the sporting activity, breaks and during award ceremonies.

The fee is 0.3 percent of gross ticket revenue, with minimum payments based on the number of spectators and contestants can take part of the music.

For an event with 500-1000 visitor fee is a minimum of 562 per day.

Music in dance courses

Whether the dancing sessions is accompanied by live or recorded music, you pay a fee based on the number of sessions and participants.

For dance shows and dance competitions there is a charge per day, based on the number of dancers and spectators in the audience.
