Compensation for music in TV commercials
Will your music be used in advertising? Here you'll find tips and tools to increase your chances of receiving your compensation as quickly as possible.
To get royalties when your music is used in advertising, STIM needs information about your musical work. Register your work of music as soon as possible on "My Pages".
How do I get paid for music in commercials?
Stim collaborates with the company BMAT, which scans commercials broadcasted on various TV channels around the world. Thanks to BMAT, you don't have to report your music usage to Stim afterwards.
Benefits of BMAT for TV commercials:
- Easy to upload the track via their online service.
- No need to use complicated ID codes and forms.
- Music identification in both Sweden and abroad.
What do I need to do?
To be paid for music in TV commercials you need to:
- Register your work of music with Stim via "My Pages".
- Create a profile at BMAT.
- Log in to BMAT's portal and upload the track recording.
When is the right time to upload the music to BMAT?
Upload the audio file as soon as possible when you know the song will be used in a commercial and no later than before the ad has aired for the final time.
When will I be paid for music in commercials?
Stim pays royalties for music in commercials twice a year, in June and December. The time of payment varies, but usually occurs 6–12 months after the music was used in the commercial.
Does BMAT cover all commercial music on Swedish TV channels?
Currently, BMAT monitors TV3, TV4, Kanal 5 and TV6, covering the majority of commercial content on Swedish channels. Note that many of Stim's sister societies also use BMAT, giving you a good chance of receiving Stim payments for TV advertising in other countries as well. Deadlines for manual reporting are April 1st prior to Stim's June payout and October 1st prior to the December payout.
The commercial in which my song is used will be shown on channels other than those monitored by BMAT — will I still be paid by Stim?
Yes, but if it is not shown on TV3, TV4, Kanal 5 or TV6, you should instead report the commercial manually via "My Pages" under the Music In Commercials menu.
What do I do if I'm missing compensation for my music that was used in a commercial?
If you still haven't received Stim payments for your music after twelve months, you can file a claim on "My Pages". The claim for missing compensation must be submitted to Stim no later than three years after the music usage.
