How is the cost calculated?
Gyms and fitness studios
The fee for sports and fitness businesses depends on how and where the music is used. For instructor-led fitness and dance classes, a new combined licence applies from 1 January 2026: Music in fitness and dance classes. It replaces the previous licences for fitness classes and dance courses.
For instructor-led classes, the fee is based on:
- the number of classes per year, and
- the number of participants per class (1–25, 26–75 or 76+).
For short classes (under 30 minutes), a separate price list applies.
Important to know
- The licence for fitness and dance classes does not cover music in areas such as changing rooms, lounges, reception areas, shops or similar spaces. For music in these areas, a separate licence for music in customer and visitor areas applies.
- If you operate at multiple locations, you need one licence per premises/physical address.
- If music is copied/transferred/stored on CD or other media for use during classes, an additional fee per instructor and year applies.
- The minimum amount per invoicing occasion is SEK 367.

Example
Calle runs a gym with an open training area and several instructor-led classes in a studio. Background music is played in the shared areas to create the right atmosphere, and instructors use music as part of their class sessions.
For Calle, this means that music used in instructor-led classes is licensed under Music in fitness and dance classes, while background music in shared areas is licensed separately under the terms for music in customer and visitor areas.
Sports events
If you organise sports events such as competitions, friendly matches, training matches or larger sporting events, you need a music licence from Stim. This covers music played before and during matches, during breaks and at award ceremonies.
The fee is calculated based on ticket revenue and minimum fees (based on the number of spectators and participants who can be exposed to the music).
Public sports and leisure facilities
If you run, for example, a swimming pool or an ice rink that is open to the public, the fee is based on the number of visitors per year.
Dance courses
For instructor-led dance classes/courses, the Music in fitness and dance classes licence applies from 1 January 2026. The fee is based on the number of classes per year and the number of participants per class.
If you organise dance performances, special terms apply. For performances with free entry, a day fee applies up to a certain number of visitors, and for larger audiences you may need to contact Customer Service.
